Baggage Claim Area

The baggage claim area is one of the most infamous parts of the airport. This area is always crowded and full of problems. If you follow a few tips, easily avoid some of the most common hassles of claiming your bags at the airport.

Mark your bag, take pictures and label

Prepare for the baggage claim area before you leave for the airport. Stick a label with your name and address on the outside and inside of each bag. Take pictures of the inside and outside of each bag, send them to your email, and save them on your mobile phone or USB drive. Make your bag easy to find by tying a piece of brightly colored fabric, ribbon or yarn to the handle.

Get to the baggage claim area before your bags do

Most airports have more than one carousel in the baggage claim area and it may take a while to find the one your airline is using. If you are not sure where to go, look for the baggage carousel board that lists the flight or ask an attendant for help. By getting there early, you beat the crowd and get in position to quickly grab your bags.

Check your tags before leaving

Before leaving the baggage claim area, match the tags on your bags with your claim tickets. If the ticket does not match double check because if you leave the baggage claim area with another person's bag you are responsible for the cost of returning it. Also check that the number of bags matches the number of claim tickets because after a long flight it is easy to forget how many bags you have.

Missing, damaged or stolen bags

When you locate your bag, check for damage. Open it and make sure everything is there. If your bag is lost, stolen or damaged do not leave the airport. Contact the airline immediately. Keep copies of any complaints or claims you submit.

Since most airlines allow one carry-on bag, completely avoid the baggage claim area if you pack lightly. Aside from saving time, save money as more airlines are now charging for checked bags.
