Checked Baggage FAQs

Use these checked baggage FAQs to clarify procedures for checking your baggage the next time you fly. The changing rules for checked baggage make knowing what to check and what not to check confusing to travelers. In the past decade, the TSA rules have constantly changed as new safety concerns have limited the items a passenger can check during air travel.
- Q: Is it a good idea to lock my luggage?
- A: Screeners may have to open your luggage during the screening process. Unlocked bags allow a TSA agent to easily screen the contents of your baggage. If you lock your bag, there is a good chance a TSA agent will have to break the lock if your luggage cannot be opened any other way. If you choose to lock your bag, use a TSA recognized lock. These locking devices enable TSA agents to open a locked bag without damaging it.
- Q: Does TSA re-lock bags that are opened for screening?
- A: If your bag has a TSA recognized lock, an agent will re-lock your luggage after it is screened. TSA screeners work hard to protect your bag if it was opened due to a security check.
- Q: What can I do to make sure my bags arrive at my destination with me?
- A: Use an outside luggage tag. Also, put something on the inside of the bag for backup identification. Keep in mind that from time to time, luggage does get lost. Put any medication, money, valuable documents and possessions in your carry-on bag.
- Q: What are the rules for transporting firearms and ammunition?
- A: All firearms and ammunition must go in your checked luggage. Declare all ammunition and firearms during the ticket check-in process. Store your unloaded firearm in a locked, hard-sided container.
